The city of Akron received its name from a Greek word that means "high," as the Portage Summit, which was the highest point on the Ohio & Erie Canal. The construction of the Ohio Canal began in 1832, and the Ohio & Erie Canal officially opened in 1833, connecting the Cuyahoga and Ohio rivers. The Village of Cascade, which later became known as North Akron, was established in the same year.
